In response to my post about David Cameron’s public support for a carbon tax in Australia, Robert McIlveen – a former staffer at the think tank Policy Exchange – has weighed in defending the Government’s plan for a floor under the carbon price. He accepts that it is important climate policies aren’t too expensive but argues the carbon price floor is much better value than some other measures like feed-in tariffs. I’ve replied on ConservativeHome setting out why the carbon price floor is bad policy and arguing that we aren’t choosing between that and feed-in tariffs: we have both right now and should scrap them both and stop driving up energy prices.
At ConservativeHome I’ve written an article following on from reports over the weekend that David Cameron is intervening in Australia to support proposals for a new carbon tax. Just last week the Government admitted that bills for large energy intensive companies are set to rise by over fifty per cent, and industry expects those rises could be even sharper. That will mean lost jobs and emissions exported to other countries instead of cut. We need to reform policy here not encourage other countries to make the same mistakes.
